How to Sell a Business for Dummies

The idea of leaving the NT has floated in and out of my head for about 10 years. Now we just need to make everything work. Step 2, list a business for sale and pray to the gods that it all works out.

I’ve owned and operated The Healthy Gut Centre for ten years. I literally started the whole business while I worked in NT Government. I was an employee that was under worked and over paid. Knowing that I needed to leave the Government I already had the next plan in place.

I had barely any idea in the health and wellness industry however I knew I wanted to help people and make them feel good. The stars aligned and one day as I was having a colonic the therapist mentioned she was selling her business. So I bought it and figured the rest out – and it worked.

Kind of hoping the same thing happens again.

Selling a business isn’t easy. I decided to get an actual appraisal done, by an actual expert in the field. I engaged a business broker and had a consultation to figure out what I could list the business for. Cost me $500 but I had an idea.

Next idea was a Business Proposal, I gathered I should have one to send to people. I used a template from Canva and did my own Business Proposal. Which I was pretty proud of, it looked amazing.

Then I had to advertise that I was selling. This was the scariest part. I finally had to let the world know my intentions and get ready for the onslaught of questions. Instagram post done, onslaught of questions answered, and the interest was rolling in. Well that was easy.

In total there was around 20 people that asked for a copy of the Business Proposal. That’s huge right? Plenty of shit kickers and a few serious ones. But one by one they dwindled away for their own reasons. Timing wasn’t right, didn’t want to take a risk. Turns out people don’t just throw away their overly paid Government jobs to take on a business.

I had two solid interests. One was a local buyer and one was interstate. I had my heart set on the local buyer, things were progressing well, I had shown her and her husband through and the next day….CRUMBLE. She didn’t feel like she had the expertise to do the job. That’s fair.

Now I find myself listing the business on Seek Commercial and BSale. Doing some email marketing around it and now just waiting and praying to whoever will listen that someone takes it off my hands.

There’s always another option right? Would I run it from afar? The answer is YES. I can. Although cutting ties with Darwin is what I feel I need to do to be fully immersed in this next phase. I don’t want to have to come back to Darwin, I want to want to come back.

I have given myself through the month of March before I implement plan B. I am a great believer that we can truly create our future through our thoughts and I have visualised the shit out of handing the keys over and training another therapist, paying it forward and knowing that I have given someone else an amazing opportunity to run and incredible business in the healing space.

Until then, we wait.
